Positive Step Forward on Senate
Premier Rodney MacDonald praised Prime Minister Stephen Harper's announcement that the federal government will introduce legislation today, Dec. 13, to let voters choose Senate candidates.
"This is positive. Nova Scotians want a more credible and effective Senate in Ottawa," the premier said.
"Our government has also taken steps to support term limits for senators. We have encouraged all Nova Scotia senators to support bill S-4."
Under that proposed legislation, senators would be restricted to terms of no longer than eight years. They currently can serve until mandatory retirement at age 75.
