Inverness School Wins Trip to Sherbrooke Village
For the second straight year, students from Inverness County will have the opportunity to go back in time and experience life in the late 1800s at Sherbrooke Village.
As the recipients of the 2007 ExxonMobil Hands on Heritage Award, students from Inverness Education Centre will get to spend three days dressed in period costume and experience hands-on activities such as churning butter, woodworking and making pottery. Last year's winners were from Port Hood School, also in Inverness County.
"The Hands On Heritage program is a definitely a win-win situation," said Keith Gallant, manager of public programming at Sherbrooke village. "The students benefit from the experience and Sherbrooke Village benefits by better utilizing our program capacity."
The award program was developed by the Historic Sherbrooke Village Development Society to provide students from schools within the Strait Regional School Board the opportunity to participate in the live-in part of the Hands on History program. It supports curriculum objectives in grades 4, 5 and 6.
The winning school was selected by Joe MacDonald, onshore operations supervisor for ExxonMobil Canada at the Point Tupper Fractionation Plant. ExxonMobil sponsors the Hands on Heritage Award, which is worth $4,000 per year.
"We are pleased to provide this support, which helps ensure that schools in our region have access to the heritage and educational experiences offered by Sherbrooke Village," said Mr. MacDonald.
