Tender Called for Englishtown Ferry Replacement

Transportation and Public Works (to Oct. 2007)

By this time next year, drivers in the Englishtown area should be crossing St. Anns Bay on a new, larger cable ferry after a tender called by the province.

The new ferry will carry 15 cars and keep the name (Angus MacAskill) of the existing ferry, which is 30 years old. The estimated cost of a new ferry is about $2.5-million.

"The Angus MacAskill is the busiest ferry in our fleet, and it is also the oldest," said Angus MacIsaac, Minister of Transportation and Public Works. "It's time for a new ferry to continue the tradition of safe and successful crossings at Englishtown."

The tender calls for the ferry to be ready for service by Sept. 30, 2007.

Transportation and Public Works operates seven ferries in the provincial highway system: four cable ferries and three ocean-going, self-propelled ferries.
