Youth to Represent Canada at Commonwealth Conference

A passion for student advocacy has earned a Nova Scotia youth the opportunity to share his views with the world.

Ty Walsh will represent Canada at a youth forum during the 16th Conference of Commonwealth Education Ministers from Dec. 11 to 14, in Cape Town, South Africa.

"We are honoured that a Nova Scotia student has been chosen to attend this conference," said Karen Casey, minister responsible for the Youth Secretariat Act. "Mr. Walsh will make a valuable contribution to the conference, and I congratulate him on earning this opportunity."

Mr. Walsh will attend the Commonwealth Education Youth Forum with delegates from 53 Commonwealth countries. The forum engages youth representatives, ages 16 to 23, from across the Commonwealth to debate education-related issues.

Mr. Walsh is a member of the Youth Advisory Council, has been a member and co-chair of the Provincial Student Education Council for two years, and was president of the Nova Scotia Secondary Schools Students Association.

"I am extremely pleased to have the opportunity to represent Canadian youth at this conference," said Mr. Walsh. "I look forward to exchanging information and ideas with the other representatives to enhance the education system."

The Conference of Commonwealth Education Ministers is a forum for ministers, teachers, youth, and education stakeholders to meet and discuss the challenges faced by education. It provides ministers with a range of views on the issues under discussion. The conference theme is access to quality education.

Mr. Walsh was nominated by the education minister and selected as one of two youth in the Canadian delegation.
