Annual Gaelic Language Day

Highland Village Museum/An Clachan Gàidhealach will host its annual Gaelic language day, entitled Cainnt 's Cànan on Saturday, Nov. 18.

Cainnt 's Cànan (speech and language) runs from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. The sessions will introduce reading skills to people learning Gaelic. Instruction will focus on basic sounds of the Gaelic alphabet.

Reading lessons will include stories transcribed from field recordings of Gaelic folklore in Cape Breton.

The day will be divided into morning and afternoon sessions that focus on vernacular phrasing and vocabulary. A session on traditional Cape Breton Gaelic songs will end the day.

Jim Watson, Highland Village manager of interpretation, will lead the sessions.

Cainnt 's Cànan provides an opportunity for Gaelic students to advance speaking and reading skills in a relaxed and historical setting.

Registration begins at 9:30 a.m. at the Highland Village visitor centre. Admission is $10 for adults and free for students. Participants must provide their lunch. Tea and coffee will be served during intermissions.
