Volunteers Recognized for Contribution to Affordable Rental Housing

More than 100 volunteers have been recognized for their efforts in building eight homes for seniors this past summer in the community of St. Andrews, Antigonish Co. The affordable housing development received funding from the Canada-Nova Scotia Affordable Housing Agreement.

Volunteers contributed to every stage of the St. Andrews' senior housing development, from getting permits to raising the roof. In addition, local companies loaned equipment or provided discounted products to make the building possible.

"Nova Scotia communities are known to come together in times of need and St. Andrews is a great example of how people can work together to make affordable housing available," said Jamie Muir, acting Minister of Community Services. "These volunteers have shown tremendous dedication, giving their time, energy, and even their tools to keep St. Andrews' seniors at home."

Through the Canada-Nova Scotia Affordable Housing Agreement, the federal government provided $200,000 in capital, and the province committed $120,000 in rent supplement funding. The land was donated by the Bergengren Credit Union, and the Municipality of the County of Antigonish contributed $80,000 to assist with a new water supply.

"Thanks to the efforts of each and every volunteer, along with the involvement of all levels of government, this greatly needed project is helping seniors in the community of St. Andrews maintain active, independent lives, and remain close to their family and friends," said Peter MacKay, Minister of Foreign Affairs and the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency, and Minister responsible for Nova Scotia, on behalf of Diane Finley, Minister of Human Resources and Social Development. "Canada's government is committed to building quality, affordable housing for those who need it most."

The St. Andrews' seniors housing complex features a wheelchair accessible unit that will allow someone with mobility challenges to live independently. The complex includes four one-bedroom and four two-bedroom units, a laundry room, and a lounge area.

"This project was possible thanks to the efforts of more than 100 volunteers who dedicated their time," said Joe Van de Wiel, chair of the St. Andrews' Seniors' Housing Association. "It continues to amaze me how so many people came out to volunteer. We couldn't have done this without their help."

As of March 31, $37.3 million has been committed by the federal government, the provincial government and its partners for the construction or renovation of more than 900 units in the province. A total of $56.2 million will be available under the Canada-Nova Scotia Affordable Housing Agreement by 2009.
