Aquaculture Harvest Festival Celebrates in Mabou

Nova Scotia's aquaculture industry will be celebrated on Saturday, Sept. 30, during the Aquaculture Harvest Festival in Mabou, Inverness Co.

"Each fall we host a festival in one of Nova Scotia's coastal regions where aquaculture operations are taking place or have the potential to be developed," said Fisheries and Aquaculture Minister Ron Chisholm. "This year we have chosen Mabou because of recent activity in establishing oyster operations."

There are four oyster farms in Mabou Harbour and many productive mussel, trout and oyster operations on Cape Breton Island. Nova Scotia's aquaculture industry was valued at $44 million in 2005.

To recognize the aquaculture industry, festival organizers have arranged for free seafood samples, a touch tank and face painting for the children, and entertainment by local musicians.

Mr. Chisholm will present a $1000 bursary to Dalbrae Academy to be awarded to a graduating student who is pursuing post-secondary studies in aquaculture or in an aquaculture-related field.

The festival takes place from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the Mabou Community Hall on Main Street. Admission to the festival is free.
