Province, Municipalities Co-operate on Residential Paving

Five road paving tenders co-funded by the province and various municipalities will bring paved streets to many Nova Scotia communities this year.

These projects have been identified as priorities by municipalities but are tendered and overseen by the province through the subdivision road paving program. Costs are shared equally.

The five tenders being called involve the following projects:

Cape Breton County:
Westmount -- Ballochmyle Drive, from Fulton Avenue to Ingrahams Lane; Melrose Avenue, from Fulton Avenue to Ingrahams Lane; and Skye Waye Drive, from Applecross Drive to Fulton Avenue. Howie Centre -- Delta Drive, from Villas Street to the end of the cul de sac; and Riverbank Drive, from Wildwood Drive to Delta Drive. Lingan -- Ainsley Court, from Ashdale Drive west for about 0.4 kilometres; Braylee Court, from Ashdale Drive east for about 0.3 kilometres; and Ashdale Drive from Old Lingan Road south to its end. The total amount of paving involved in this tender is about 2.3 kilometres. The tender closes on Friday, Sept. 8.

Colchester County:
Greenfield -- Glen Abbey Drive, from Wilson Mountain Road east for about 0.6 kilometres. Onslow -- MacLaughlin Avenue, east of Cottam Drive west for about 0.3 kilometres; Cottam Drive, from Trunk 2 south to MacLaughlin Drive. The total amount of paving involved is about 1.2 kilometres. The tender closes on Friday, Sept. 8.

Halifax County:
Lawrencetown -- Lisa Ann Drive, Michelle Drive, Shepherds Lane, Megan Drive, Mark Crescent, Lester Drive, Renee Drive, and Trevor Drive. The total amount of paving involved is about 5.8 kilometres. The tender closes on Monday, Sept. 18. Three Brooks Subdivision -- Three Brooks Drive and White Sands Court. St. Margarets Bay Village -- Ashford Close, Fox Hollow Drive, Ashbury Court, Fox Point Drive, Fox Hollow Drive, Fox Ridge Court, and Magnolia Court. The total amount of paving involved is about four kilometres. Ashbury Court, and parts of Fox Point Drive and Fox Hollow Drive are being paid 100 per cent by Halifax Regional Municipality. The tender closes on Friday, Sept. 15.

Hants County:
Enfield -- Daun Avenue, from Wilson Road to Boyd Avenue. Elmsdale -- Pine Grove Drive, from Route 214 to its end; Pinehill Drive, from Route 214 to Beech Street; Lorna Court, from Beech Street to the end of the cul de sac; Beech Street, from Pinehill Drive to Lorna Court. Lantz -- Green Road Extension, from the end of pavement at Green Road to the apartment building parking lot. The total amount of paving involved is about 1.3 kilometres. The tender closes on Friday, Sept. 15.

All five tenders are scheduled for completion during the current construction season.

"These five tenders are part of our Aid to Municipalities Subdivision Road Paving Program," said Angus MacIsaac, Minister of Transportation and Public Works. "By investing $2.4 million overall in this year's program the province is helping municipalities build pavement in growing communities."

The Department of Transportation and Public Works' highways division manages more than 23,000 kilometres of roads in Nova Scotia. It maintains 4,100 bridges and operates seven provincial ferries. Staff provide services from district offices in Bridgewater, Bedford, Truro, and Sydney.
