Sherbrooke Village Hosts St. Mary's Summer Celebrations

A seafood chowder cook-off, a community yard sale, free family concert and fireworks display are among events scheduled to celebrate summer in St. Mary's. The Municipality of the District of St. Mary's will partner with the historic Sherbrooke Village for St. Mary's Summer Celebrations on Saturday, Aug. 26.

Maritime Amusements will have rides in the village parking lot and community organizations will provide food concessions. The community yard sale will run from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. at which time the judging for the chowder cook-off will take place. The cook-off is open to all residents of the municipality and cash prizes will be awarded for the best recipe. All events will take place in and around the Sherbrooke Village Performance Centre.

The free family concert will feature Guysborough County entertainers, with rock band Point of View to open the show. Headlining the event will be Route 16, a popular band from eastern Nova Scotia. The concert will run from 5:30 p.m. to 9 p.m.

St. Mary's council spokesperson Don Dunbar said it is important to support local talent and to produce an event that is accessible to residents and visitors alike.

"We wanted to showcase our regional performers and, at the same time, showcase our community and we feel the summer celebrations will do just that. The date was chosen to help celebrate the summer before families get ready to return to school. Events likes this help draw people to the area and benefit local businesses and community groups. We hope people will be ready for an end of the summer blast!" said Mr. Dunbar.
