Irish Gaelic Language Specialist to Visit Highland Village
An Irish language specialist will travel from Belfast, Northern Ireland, for the Highland Village Museum Seòmbar an t-Samhraidh (The Summer Room) lecture series. The lecture will be held Monday, Aug. 21, at 7 p.m.
Janet Muller is CEO of Pobal, an umbrella organization for Northern Ireland's Irish speaking community. The organization promotes all aspects of Irish language development between government, voluntary organizations and institutions. Pobal currently has more than 30,000 members in Belfast alone.
Ms. Muller oversees the organization's language development strategy. She spearheaded the drafting of Pobal's proposals to the Irish Language Act for Northern Ireland, which succeeded in attracting unprecedented support from politicians, academics, human rights organizations and the Irish speaking community.
Ms. Muller has presented papers at conferences in Ireland, Scotland, Catalonia, and Canada and is currently carrying out research into international best practices for language rights and language planning in Canada. She will speak on the work of Pobal and Irish language development in the Highland Village Tuning Room at the back of the concert stage. Admission is free. All are welcome.
