Paved Barrington Bypass Will Improve Road Travel

Road travel through Shelburne County will improve when paving work is completed on the Barrington bypass this fall.

The Department of Transportation and Public Works announced a paving tender for a new section of Highway 103 that is about 8.7 kilometres in length. The new section, from Barrington to Oak Park, includes the Oak Park connector and the ramps.

The construction of the intersection of Highway 103 and Trunk 3 will also be completed as part of the project and provide another access to the Barrington area.

"The work on the Barrington bypass is part of our commitment to upgrade and expand the 100-series highway network to benefit Nova Scotians," said Angus MacIsaac, Minister of Transportation and Public Works. "By the end of this fall, residents and visitors will have a paved and extended highway system they having been long waiting for."

The paving tender for either asphalt or cement concrete will close on Tuesday, Aug. 22.

"Making Nova Scotia's highway system efficient and sustainable is one of the goals for this government," said Mr. MacIsaac. "We are looking at increased use of cement concrete for highway construction as a durable and cost-effective alternative, increasing the life of our roads and highways."

The highways division of the Department of Transportation and Public Works manages more than 23,000 kilometres of roads in Nova Scotia.
