Nova Scotia Youth Help Sail Amistad Home
Three more African Nova Scotian teens will sail aboard the Freedom Schooner Amistad as it returns to Mystic, Conn. on Wednesday, Aug. 9.
Courtney Williams, Julian Colley and Brandon Tolliver of East Preston were chosen to take part in the Sankofa Sail program, an educational initiative inspired by the Amistad incident.
Three other teenagers, Shacawn Clayton, Ryan States and Jeremy Tolliver, returned from Connecticut last week after a 12-day sail aboard the Freedom Schooner Amistad.
"The Freedom Schooner Amistad's visit to Halifax has been an amazing educational opportunity for our youth," said Wayn Hamilton, CEO of the Office of African Nova Scotian Affairs. "Three sailed up and three will sail back. They have had and will have the chance to experience a piece of our history first hand."
The Freedom Schooner Amistad, a re-creation of the 19th century schooner, La Amistad, visited Halifax from Sunday, July 30, to Monday, Aug. 7.
The sail back to Connecticut will wrap up a series of events related to the visit, which included a freedom festival featuring local musicians, a parade of sails, daily youth diversity forums and sails, and daily public tours of the ship.
