Traditional Tunes and Gaelic Songs Entertain at Highland Village

Visitors to the Highland Village Museum will be humming traditional Gaelic tunes now that the Village has added singers, piano and fiddle players to its animation schedule as part of its living history experience.

The Gaelic song tradition is kept alive at the Highland Village Museum through regular céilidhs and milling frolics led by singers and Gaelic speakers including Joanne MacIntyre, Tara Rankin, Jeff MacDonald, Jim Watson, and Beth MacNeil. Visitors have the opportunity to participate in these activities and in "Learn a Gaelic Song" sessions.

Musicians Tara Rankin and Carla Pace entertain visitors regularly in the schoolhouse and various other sites on the hill. Ms. Rankin plays traditional Cape Breton tunes on the piano. Ms. Pace adds her musical talent by performing fiddle tunes and teaching step dancing.

These and other traditional cultural activities take place at various times throughout the day. A current schedule of special daily activities is available on the Highland Village website, http://highlandvillage.museum.gov.ns.ca .

The Highland Village Museum/An Clachan Gàidhealach is located in Iona overlooking Bras d'Or Lakes. It is a part of the Nova Scotia museum family. For more information on this event or other Highland Village programs call 902-725-2272, or e-mail [email protected] .
