Precautions Urged Because of Heat and Humidity

The Department of Health Promotion and Protection is urging people to take precautions as the humidex could reach 40 degrees today, July 18, in the Annapolis Valley and Northern Nova Scotia.

A humidex and health advisory is in effect for the counties of Annapolis, Kings, Hants, Colchester, Cumberland, Pictou and Antigonish where there is increased risk of heat stress and other heat-related illness.

There's a potential for those most at risk to become ill as a result of high heat and humidity. People who are at most risk are infants, pre-schoolers, adults aged 65 or older and people with chronic conditions such as lung or heart problems.

Health officials recommend that those at risk stay in shaded or air conditioned areas as much as possible, drink plenty of water, wear light colored clothing and take breaks often if you are exercising or working outdoors in these areas.

Dr. Richard Gould, a medical officer of health in Nova Scotia, suggests organizers of sport and recreational activities build in adequate water breaks and consider rescheduling activities if the humidex exceeds 40 today. "People can listen to the radio for the special weather update. Our main concern is that the elderly, children and people with heart or lung problems are at risk for heat related illnesses when it becomes this humid," he said.

The humidex tells us how hot the weather feels to the average person. It combines the temperature and humidity into one number, taking into account the two most important factors that affect summer comfort. For important heat safety tips, go to www.gov.ns.ca/health/ocmoh .
