Chair of Workers' Compensation Board Resigns

Environment and Labour Minister Mark Parent announced today, July 7, that Workers' Compensation Board (WCB) chair Louis Comeau has tendered his resignation.

The minister offered high praise for Mr. Comeau's work with the board and said he accepted the resignation with regret.

"Mr. Comeau contributed tremendously to the work of the board, developing many key programs and initiatives," Mr. Parent told the House Estimates Committee as he presented his department's budget.

"I want to express my gratitude for the years of public service he has provided to the Workers' Compensation Board and the province of Nova Scotia."

Mr. Comeau was appointed in July 2002. He has not announced his resignation date, but will work with the board to find a mutually convenient time before Aug. 31.

"I've enjoyed my time at WCB and I hope that I have helped make a difference," said Mr. Comeau. "I leave knowing that WCB is in good hands, ready to continue the work towards a healthier and safer workforce in Nova Scotia."

Under Mr. Comeau's direction, the board involved interested parties in developing and implementing a statement of principles and objectives for governance and accountability that will help guide the board's direction for many years.

Mr. Parent said the board also made improvements to the supplementary benefits program, cancer benefits were extended to both professional and volunteer firefighters, and chronic pain benefits were implemented.

Extensive education initiatives to improve workplace safety and injury prevention were other key accomplishments during Mr. Comeau's four years with the board, he said.

Deputy chair Ramsay Duff will take over as chair until a new appointment is made. Mr. Duff brings a wealth of knowledge to the position and has worked with Mr. Comeau to develop and implement many of the current board initiatives.

The process of hiring a new chair will begin once Mr. Parent appoints members of a selection committee. The committee will consist of four members of representative interest groups and will screen, interview and select the new chair.
