Rotary Centennial Look-Off and Performance Platform Opens

Nova Scotians and visitors have a new place to experience and enjoy the Halifax waterfront.

Fred Were, president of the Rotary Club of Halifax, and Eric Thomson, chair of the Waterfront Development board of directors, officially opened the Rotary Centennial Look-Off today, June 27, at South Battery Park, on the Halifax waterfront.

"The rotary organization celebrates more than 100 years as the world's oldest service club," said Mr. Were. "We are proud that the three Halifax Rotary clubs have collectively sponsored this legacy project in partnership with Waterfront Development Corporation Limited."

The three metro Rotary clubs (Halifax, Halifax Northwest and Halifax Harbourside) worked with the Waterfront Development Corporation to create the look-off and performance platform to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Rotary International.

The cost of the project was about $125,000 and was shared by Waterfront Development Corporation Limited and the clubs.

"Waterfront Development Corporation Limited and the metro Rotary clubs have an interest in bringing people to the waterfront for sight-seeing and entertainment," said Mr. Thomson. "This look-off and performance platform will create another great place on the Halifax Harbourwalk for Nova Scotians and our visitors to enjoy our magnificent views and home-grown talent."

The Waterfront Development Corporation Limited is a provincial Crown corporation that has been planning, coordinating, promoting and developing properties, events and activities on designated waterfronts around Halifax Harbour for the last 30 years.

In more than 31,000 communities worldwide, Rotary clubs have organized centennial community projects that celebrate Rotary while fulfilling an important need in their area. Other clubs are reaching beyond their back yards to participate in the Rotary Centennial Twin Club Program, a centennial-year effort that pairs clubs from different countries.

Rotary is an organization of business and professional leaders united worldwide who provide humanitarian service, encourage high ethical standards, and help to build goodwill and peace in the world. Paul P. Harris formed the world's first service club, the Rotary Club of Chicago, Illinois, USA, on February 23, 1905. The name Rotary is derived from the early practice of rotating meetings among members' offices. Today there are about 1.2 million Rotary club members of more than 30,000 Rotary clubs in 164 countries.
