Public Lecture Focuses on Skin Cancer

A series of lectures, designed by Cancer Care Nova Scotia, will provide Nova Scotians with quality cancer information.

Cancer Care Nova Scotia will launch its Cancer Answers public lecture series with an evening information session titled Skin Cancer: Myths and Facts. The session will take place on Wednesday, June 7, between 7 p.m. and 8:30 p.m.

"Skin cancer is almost completely preventable," said Dr. Richard Langley, chair of Sun Safe Nova Scotia and a member of Cancer Care Nova Scotia's skin cancer site team. "Even so, about 2,500 Nova Scotians are expected to be diagnosed with non-melanoma or melanoma skin cancer in 2006. With warm weather approaching, it is timely to educate and remind people about the important steps one should take to protect themselves against the sun's powerful rays."

The information will be shared in an interactive manner, with time for discussion and questions. Information will also be available for people to take home.

The lecture will be held in the Bethune Ballroom, Victoria General site, Queen Elizabeth II Health Sciences Centre on Tower Road in Halifax. It will also be available by video conference at five other sites across the province: St. Martha's Regional Hospital, Antigonish; Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville; Colchester Regional Hospital, Truro; Aberdeen Hospital, New Glasgow; and Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.

Cancer Care Nova Scotia is a program of the Department of Health created to reduce the burden of cancer on individuals, families and the health care system through prevention, screening, education and research.
