Nova Scotians Invited to Tea on June 17
All Nova Scotians are invited to share a cup of tea at Government House on Saturday, June 17, in honour of the 80th birthday of Queen Elizabeth II.
Myra Freeman, the lieutenant-governor of Nova Scotia, and her husband, Lawrence, will host the celebration of the Queen's official birthday.
The Queen was born on April 21, but Saturday, June 17, is the official day of recognizing this milestone.
The tradition of having an official birthday began years ago when inclement weather ruined parades and other outdoor celebrations for monarchs who had birthdays in the winter months. Queen Elizabeth II has continued the tradition, marking her official birthday each June.
"In England, festivities will include the Trooping the Colour parade at Buckingham Palace," said Lt.-Gov. Freeman. "We thought it was important to open Government House to all Nova Scotians to have an opportunity to honour Her Majesty on such a special occasion. We hope that people from all across the province will come to Government House to help us celebrate."
Greetings will be forwarded to the Queen this month from Nova Scotians who signed a congratulatory book that will be available at Government House until June 17.
"The greetings book will be sent following the tea," said the lieutenant-governor. "The tea on June 17 is another opportunity for Nova Scotians to honour 80 years of dedication and commitment by Her Majesty to the people of the Commonwealth.
Tea will be served from 2 to 4 p.m. at Government House, 1451 Barrington St., Halifax.
