Ten Years of Recycling in Nova Scotia
Nova Scotians have "many happy returns" to celebrate as the province marks 10 years of successful recycling and composting programs.
During Environment Week, (June 4 - 10), activities will be taking place around the province in recognition of Nova Scotia's decade of recycling achievements.
"Through a co-operative effort by our partners in the recycling field, great progress is being made," said Carolyn Bolivar-Getson, Minister of Environment and Labour. "Nova Scotia has much to celebrate as we mark 10 years of recycling in the province."
In the last 10 years, Nova Scotians have recycled:
- two billion beverage containers
- seven million tires
- one million litres of leftover paint
- more than 750,000 tonnes of paper
- more than one million tonnes of organics
"We are proud to celebrate our waste reduction accomplishments over the last 10 years. Our recycling and composting programs are first class and the enthusiasm of Nova Scotians is second-to-none," said Rick Ramsay, chair of Resource Recovery Fund Board Nova Scotia. "We hope Nova Scotians will join us in celebrating our collective achievements during Environment Week."
Many family-oriented events have been planned, including:
- an Environmental Expo at Halifax's Grand Parade
- an Enviro-Fair Open House at the Port Hawkesbury Civic Centre
- a Community Swap, a chance to exchange household goods, in Yarmouth County.
A list of scheduled events is being published in provincial and daily newspapers under the slogan "Many Happy Returns".
Nova Scotia is a leader in the country in access to recycling programs. All Nova Scotia homeowners have curbside collection of recyclables. Almost 80 per cent have curbside collection of organic material.
Environment Week events taking place across the province will be an educational and entertaining experience for everyone. They will feature talented Nova Scotia performers, children's activities, community barbeques and prize giveaways.
