Celebrate World Oceans Day
Whether you live inland or along its shores, everyone has a connection to the ocean. Nova Scotians are being encouraged to celebrate that connection on World Oceans Day, Thursday, June 8.
"In Nova Scotia we are closely connected to ocean and it touches all of our lives in some way, whether by providing employment, food, or recreational opportunities," said Ron Chisholm, Minister of Nova Scotia Fisheries and Aquaculture. "We can all do our part to ensure that the ocean is protected and conserved for future generations."
Representatives of government, industry and non-government organizations will gather at the Halifax waterfront to raise awareness of the important role and link that the oceans have in everyday life.
The Oceans Day activities will be held on the wharf behind the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. There will be interactive and educational exhibits and displays, a touch tank, demonstrations, tour of an oceanographic vessel, and face painting.
June 8 was identified as World Oceans Day by the United Nations at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro in 1992.
