Premier Announces Investment for New Recreational Centre

Residents of Berwick and surrounding communities, are a step closer to swimming, skating and curling in a new multi-purpose recreational facility.

Premier Rodney MacDonald and Health Promotion and Protection Minister Barry Barnet announced a $2-million investment in the Kings Mutual Century Centre today, April 24, at the Berwick Heights Golf Course. They were joined by community leaders and volunteers who have been involved in planning the $9-million facility that will replace the aging Berwick and District Arena

"This new facility will be a place where families can come year round to play together and become healthier," said Premier MacDonald. "Investments in recreation facilities are another way that we're supporting communities and a healthier population."

Development of the new facility is being led by the Apple Dome Steering Committee, which is part of the Berwick and District Community Association.

"We've had huge community support. There is hardly a business in the community that hasn't supported this project," said George Moody, steering committee chair. "With this investment by the province we are confident that the project will now move forward. As a result, this new facility will have an economic impact on the area and provide benefits to the young and old. It's intended to be a family-oriented facility which is a big attraction for people."

The new centre will replace the aging Berwick and District Arena that has been serving Berwick and surrounding communities for more than 50 years.

The facility will accommodate an ice skating surface, curling rink, indoor walking track, fitness centre, library, banquet room, outdoor swimming pool, and become home to the Berwick Lion's Club.

"We are impressed with the dedication shown by the community plans to create a safe and accessible facility for the people of Berwick and surrounding communities," said Mr. Barnet. "Berwick has a vision for a healthy, vibrant community. We are pleased to support their efforts and applaud them for their persistence in making the Kings Mutual Century Centre a reality."

Construction is dependent on further funding and is tentatively scheduled to begin later this year or early next year with completion by 2008.
