Conciliator in Contact with Stora, Union

A government conciliator is in regular contact with Stora Enso and the Communications, Energy and Paperworkers Union of Canada, Local 972, acting Minister of Environment and Labour Michael Baker said today, March 17.

"Our services are available at any time should they be requested by the parties," said Mr. Baker. "The department's conciliator has logged more than 300 hours of work with the company and the union, and remains in touch with both sides."

The department never comments on the substance or progress of an industrial dispute, he said.

Mr. Baker said the Department of Environment and Labour respects the collective bargaining process and the rights of both parties to negotiate as they see fit.

"Our services are available but the government can only provide assistance," said Mr. Baker. "Both parties are experienced in collective bargaining and they are aware of their responsibilities."

The Department of Environment and Labour provides services to parties involved in industrial disputes and therefore remains strictly neutral.

The union has been locked out of the Port Hawkesbury paper mill since Jan. 26.
