Nominees Sought for Order of Nova Scotia

It is time once again for deserving Nova Scotians to join those who have been recognized and honoured for their resourceful, creative and innovative contributions to their communities.

People across Nova Scotia are reminded to nominate, or renominate, someone who has made a significant contribution to their community for the Order of Nova Scotia. The nomination deadline for 2006 is Friday, March 17.

"There have been some very deserving people inducted into the Order of Nova Scotia since it began in 2001," said Rodney MacDonald, Minister responsible for the Order of Nova Scotia Act. "I encourage Nova Scotians to nominate someone they feel has made a significant contribution to their community."

Each year five recipients are selected by the Order of Nova Scotia Advisory Council, which is made up of community representatives from across the province.

"The quality of the nominations received each year makes choosing five a challenging task," said Sharon Oliver, chair of the advisory council. "All the nominees work hard to make their communities safer and stronger. We want to remind Nova Scotians they can renominate someone who was nominated in the past -- they will be considered again."

Nova Scotians can be nominated for several reasons. They may have worked to preserve the cultural identity of their communities, excel in the arts or in developing the arts. Others might have improved the economic well-being of their communities. Others may be great educators, scientists or health-care innovators. Nominees might also include those who have helped the needy or worked to preserve the environment.

Nomination forms can be picked up at Access Nova Scotia centres and public libraries throughout the province. They are also available at Province House, at the offices of all members of the legislative assembly, Nova Scotia members of parliament and senators, as well as municipal offices.
