Premier Honours Long-serving Staff of Government House
With more than 100 combined years of service to the Province of Nova Scotia, seldom will you find two people more dedicated to their work than Walter and Ethel Garnier.
Premier John Hamm honoured Mr. and Ms. Garnier with a Service of Distinction award at a reception at Province House today, Jan. 31.
"Today we are honouring two people who have demonstrated unparalleled commitment to Nova Scotia's public service and to their work," said Premier Hamm. "Walter and Ethel are the two longest-serving employees of the province and over the years have graciously welcomed royalty, dignitaries and visitors to Government House."
Mrs. Garnier has been a member of Government House staff for 48 years. In 1994 she was presented with the Royal Victoria Medal by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, as a mark of personal esteem.
Mr. Garnier has worked at Government House for almost 60 years. He is the recipient of the Golden Jubilee Medal and is the province's longest-serving public servant. During his career he has served 12 lieutenant-governors.
Mr. and Mrs. Garnier are the longest serving household staff of any vice-regal family in the Commonwealth.
