YMCA in Sydney To Undergo Renovations
People of all ages in Sydney will have more opportunities to be active and come together as a community thanks to planned renovations to the local YMCA.
Premier John Hamm and Energy Minister Cecil Clarke, on behalf of Health Promotion Minister Rodney MacDonald, announced a $1.5 million investment today, Jan. 12, at the YMCA in Sydney.
"Having a place like the YMCA is important for not only the health of Nova Scotians but also for community spirit," said Premier Hamm. "Renovating the YMCA will help create a renewed energy within the community. Children, families, and seniors will have a safe place to gather and meet, which will lead to more people being connected to their community."
The current YMCA has been providing programs to the Sydney community for 120 years. In 2003 a building audit report indicated that the building has a limited life expectancy. A concept for a new facility was prepared and it was estimated that the project would cost $10 million.
"Childhood obesity and inactivity rates are a growing concern for all Nova Scotians," said Mr. Clarke "By investing in infrastructure such as this we are supporting the hard work and dedication of communities who want the opportunity to live healthier lives."
Cape Breton Regional Municipality has also committed $1.5 million to the project. Another $3.75 million has been committed by Enterprise Cape Breton Corporation.
"This is a very exciting day for the YMCA," said Robin Gogan, co-chair of the YMCA of Cape Breton board of directors. "This contribution, along with the contributions from the government of Canada and the Cape Breton Regional Municipality, will help to move our vision for the YMCA another step forward."
Ms. Gogan said the provincial investment now enables the YMCA to development its plans for a capital campaign to raise another $1.5 million needed for the renovations.
