Scotia Slate to Cut Costs and Boost Export Sales

Economic Development (Aug. 1999 - Jan. 2009)

A stone company in Hants County is hoping to carve out a bigger chunk of the construction market, thanks to a provincial loan.

A $150,000 loan, announced today, Dec. 5, will help Scotia Slate Products Ltd. complete an expansion of its processing facility. The company will also use the money to hire a consultant to help it become more efficient and decrease production costs.

"This loan is an investment in a company that has potential to develop a stronger presence in the construction industry," said Ernest Fage, Minister of Economic Development. "The province will continue to support opportunities for growth and jobs in rural Nova Scotia."

Scotia Slate has operated a slate quarry since 1996. The company supplies stones for everything from fireplaces and walkways to tabletops and rooftops. The company currently employs 10 full-time and two part-time staff, and 15 workers on a seasonal basis.

"Our products are second to none in the world," said Debra Donovan, chief executive officer of Scotia Slate Products Ltd. "The expansion involved a lot of working capital but we are confident the upgrade and an updated business plan, reflecting the improved capacity, will have a positive impact on our domestic and export sales."

Over the years, Scotia Slate has grown from a pick and shovel operation to a company that provides high quality slate products to companies across North America.
