Lighthouse Beach Restoration Gets Go Ahead

Work will begin immediately to restore Lighthouse Beach in Pictou County.

The province has received the necessary approvals from the federal government, allowing the project to proceed. The Nova Scotia Department of Transportation and Public Works awarded a $1.8-million contract to Alva Construction Ltd. The contractor expects to be setting up the work site on Monday, Dec. 5.

The contract will result in the washed-out area of the beach being filled with large rocks and covering them with sand. In the spring, grasses will be transplanted on the dune side of the repaired beach.

At present, contaminated water is flowing through the washed-out section of the beach and into Moodie Cove. Repairing the beach is expected to solve the contamination problem in the cove.

Previously the beach has been vulnerable to winter storms and has been washed out numerous times. The restored beach with its rock core and added sand is expected to better withstand storms in the future.
