Highway 101 Twinning Enters Next Phase
Work to twin Highway 101 will continue during the winter months. A tender announcement by the Department of Transportation and Public Works will result in the clearing of sections of right-of-way for the new lanes of the highway.
The tender will result in work in the following areas:
- In Hants County, from Ellershouse to Exit 5 in Windsor and from Falmouth to the Kings/Hants county line.
- In Kings County, from the Kings/Hants county line to Exit 9 at Avonport.
This total of 18.7 kilometres of clearing is scheduled to be completed by the end of March 2006. The tender closes on Thursday, Dec. 8.
"This winter clearing will set the stage for more road construction next summer as the province continues to upgrade Highway 101," said Transportation and Public Works Minister Ron Russell. "Building a better and safer Highway 101 is one of our top priorities."
This tender is being funded through a cost-shared agreement between the province and the government of Canada. The province is funding about 62 per cent and the federal government is funding about 38 per cent.
The Department of Transportation and Public Works' highways division manages more than 23,000 kilometres of roads in Nova Scotia. It maintains 4,100 bridges and operates seven provincial ferries. Staff provide services from district offices in Bridgewater, Bedford, Truro and Sydney.
