Port Hood School Wins Trip to Sherbrooke
Students from the Bayview Education Centre in Port Hood, Inverness Co., will go back in time and experience life in the late 1800's at Sherbrooke Village.
As the recipients of the 2006 Hands on Heritage Award, the students will spend three days dressed in period costume and taking part in such hands-on activities as woodworking, black smithing and churning their own butter.
The award program was developed to provide students from schools within the Strait Regional School Board the opportunity to participate in the live-in part of the Hands on History program. The Hands On History school program supports curriculum objectives in grades 4, 5 and 6.
"The Hands On Heritage Program is a great example of a win-win partnership. The students benefit from the experience and Sherbrooke Village benefits by making better use of our program capacity," said George Brothers, manager of program development for Sherbrooke Village.
The winning school was selected, by Hudson MacLeod, a representative of ExxonMobil Canada, the sponsor for the Hands on Heritage Award, worth $4,000.
"We are excited to provide this support, which helps ensure that schools in our region have access to the heritage and educational experiences offered by Sherbrooke Village," said Mr. MacLeod.
In 2007 two schools will each be eligible to win the $2,000 live-in opportunity through the ExxonMobil Hands On Heritage Award. For more information on the Sherbrooke Village Hands On History program call 1-888-743-7845 or see the Hands On History website at www.handsonhistory.ca .
