New Supported Housing Program for Women
Women will receive help to move from homelessness to greater independence thanks to the approval of a new supported housing program.
The Women in Supported Housing (WISH) program combines housing with additional supports to help women in transition with the day-to-day management of their household affairs including budgeting, making appointments and other life skills. The program will provide up to 24 beds in supported housing.
"We are pleased to work with the community to provide a range of services for women who may need extra support to make the transition from homelessness," said Community Services Minister David Morse. "This program will provide housing and support services to help foster greater independence."
Provincial funding to provide rent for apartments, daily funding for support services for up to 24 women, and some program operational costs is estimated to be $272,340 annually.
The WISH program will be funded by the Department of Community Services and delivered by the YWCA of Halifax.
To be eligible for the WISH program, women 19 years of age and older must be in receipt of income assistance, and be approved as a suitable candidate for supported housing services by their caseworker.
