Local Students Visit Museum as Part of Pilot Project

Elementary students in four schools who have been learning together on-line will meet for the first time on Wednesday, Oct. 26, at the Fundy Geological Museum in Parrsboro.

The Grade 4 students from the Chignecto Central Regional School Board are participating in a pilot project to determine the efficiency of learning with laptop computers.

Gail Coldwell, curriculum planner for the 1:1 Learning program for the school board, said the Fundy Geological Museum was selected as the meeting place because it offers programs related to the Department of Education's curriculum outcome in the area of science.

"We chose the museum because of its extensive exhibits and programming on rocks and minerals," said Ms. Coldwell. "The visit will provide the students with an excellent hands-on learning experience and an opportunity to interact with one another."

"We're looking forward to meeting the Grade 4 students and contributing towards the pilot project," said Pat Welton, co-ordinator of public programs at the museum. "The program we've developed will include a beach tour highlighting the many rocks and minerals in the area, a rock and mineral specimen card and a lab."

The students will arrive at the museum on Wednesday, Oct. 26 at 11 a.m. for the three-hour program.

Students participating in the pilot project attend Brookfield Elementary, Thorburn Consolidated, Cobequid Consolidated Elementary in Old Barns, and Junction Road Elementary in Springhill.
