Commemorative Trafalgar Activities at Maritime Museum

Visitors to the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic this weekend will be able to climb a yard arm, reef a sail and take the challenge of the gun run.

To commemorate the 200th anniversary of the Battle of Trafalgar, the museum is presenting three days of special programming, from Friday, Oct. 21, to Sunday, Oct. 23.

Considered a decisive naval battle in the Napoleonic Wars, Trafalgar was a historic victory that proved influential in establishing the British Empire's long reign of supremacy at sea.

On Oct. 21, 1805, Lord Horatio Nelson lead 27 British ships into battle against French and Spanish fleets. Although Lord Nelson was mortally wounded during the battle, his decision to divide his fleet into two parts and drive through the French line earned him the victory, and a place in history.

Visitors to the museum will have the opportunity to learn more about the battle, Lord Nelson and his ship, HMS Victory.

A special temporary exhibit features highlights of the museum's collection of rare objects reflecting Lord Nelson's courage, leadership and sacrifice. It includes two models of Trafalgar ships and a massive flag from the HMS Victory.

The Maritime Museum of the Atlantic is located at 1675 Lower Water St. in Halifax. Activities will take place from 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, and from 1 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. on Sunday. Admission will be charged.
