Eighth Annual Aquaculture Harvest Festival Celebrates in Lunenburg

Lunenburg County's aquaculture industry will be recognized on Saturday, Oct. 1, during Aquaculture Harvest Festival celebrations at the Town of Lunenburg's picturesque waterfront.

"Each year we choose an area of the province where the aquaculture industry is succeeding to host the festival," said Chris d'Entremont, Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries. "This year we are proud to acknowledge Lunenburg County for its commitment to the industry."

Lunenburg County's aquaculture industry contributes more than $3 million a year to the province's $24-million aquaculture sector. The county's aquaculture operators farm oysters, salmon, scallops, mussels, clams, rainbow trout, sea scallops and steelhead salmon for the local and international markets.

To help celebrate Lunenburg's contribution to the industry, festival organizers have arranged for free seafood samples, a touch tank and face painting for the children, and entertainment by the Lunenburg County Fiddlers.

Mr. d'Entremont will present a $500 bursary to Lunenburg High School to be awarded to a graduating student who is pursuing post-secondary studies in aquaculture or in an aquaculture-related field.

The festival takes place from noon to 3 p.m. beside the Fisheries of the Atlantic Museum, Lunenburg. Admission to the festival is free.
