Hog Loan Support Program Extended

Nova Scotia pork producers will have more time to take advantage of a program aimed at helping the industry deal with periodic declines in market prices for hogs.

Agriculture and Fisheries Minister Chris d'Entremont announced an extension to the Hog Loan Support Program today, Aug. 18.

Pork Nova Scotia met with the minister on July 28 to discuss ongoing challenges facing the pork industry.

"The government continues to support the industry through difficult times," said Mr. d'Entremont. "We feel it is a reasonable request to continue with the program while the money is still available. We are pleased that the pork industry continues to work on a plan for their future."

Of the $3.5 million provided to the hog industry in 2003, $1 million is still available through the program. The money will be available until March 31, 2007.

"We are pleased the minister has made the rest of the money available to producers by extending the program's end date," said Henry Vissers, executive director, Pork Nova Scotia.

Government and industry are working together to develop the direction of future programs.
