Veterans Memorial Park Opens in Bridgewater

Year of the Veteran

Veterans Memorial Park, in Bridgewater, has had a make-over. Visitors now have smoother walking paths and easier access to the cenotaph and monuments.

The redesigned park, which opens on Sunday, Aug. 14, is one way the community is recognizing Year of the Veteran.

"Events such as these provide us with opportunities to pause and remember our veterans, and to reflect upon the sacrifices they made to protect Canadian values," said Carolyn Bolivar-Getson, Minister of Human Resources, on behalf of Cecil Clarke, Minister responsible for Year of the Veteran. "These are opportunities for us to teach our young people to respect, admire and honour our veterans. This passing down of their legacy is perhaps the most important role of remembrance."

As part of the redesign, the grounds of the park have been upgraded, making it accessible for wheelchair and walker use. The cenotaph and West Nova Scotia Regiment/Merchant Navy monument have been refurbished. A new Honour Roll monument will also be unveiled. All monuments are made of black granite.

Funding for the park project was provided by several sources, including a recreation facility development grant to the Bridgewater Legion Branch 24 from Nova Scotia Health Promotion.
