Province to Support Salt Fish Initiative

The province is helping develop a new hook for a traditional industry.

Agriculture and Fisheries Minister Chris d'Entremont says Nova Scotia is investing $250,000 in an industry development partnership for the salt fish sector.

"In recent years, global forces have impacted our salt fish industry and its competitive position," Mr. d'Entremont said today, Aug. 12. "These funds will help the industry to develop new markets, products and international business initiatives. Our fishing industry sells quality products around the world and will continue to do so through this initiative."

The Nova Scotia salt fish sector has a long trading history and is an important contributor to the provincial economy. The industry exports products totalling around $90 million each year.

A recent industry analysis highlighted opportunities to enhance the salt fish sector's position in the global market.

"The fishing industry is a key driver of Nova Scotia's economy," said Denny Morrow, executive director of the Nova Scotia Fish Packers Association. "The salt fish sector has been experiencing trying times so we are pleased the provincial government recognizes its value to the economy and is partnering with us to develop a plan to move forward."

Program details will be finalized in the coming weeks during meetings between industry and government. The new spending will allow industry leaders to create new marketing initiatives and fund business development projects identified by government and industry.
