Three Road Improvement Contracts Awarded in Cape Breton County
The province has awarded three separate contracts worth a total of more than $2.5 million for road improvements in Cape Breton County.
The work, which is scheduled to be finished by the end of the year, involves three separate contracts, two for road repaving and a third for bridge rehabilitation.
The first contract is for repaving on Route 223 from the Highway 125 underpass, near North Sydney, for 6.6 kilometres east toward Leitches Creek. The winning contractor was Alva Construction Limited with a bid of $2,155,263.
Also awarded was a contract for the construction of 1.3 kilometres of new pavement on the following three roads: Leblanc Road in Millville; Petersfield Court in Westmount; and Andrews Lane in Port Morien. The cost of this contract is being shared with the Cape Breton Regional Municipality. The winning contractor was Municipal Ready Mix Ltd. with a bid of $324,752.
The third contract is for the refurbishment of Catalone River Bridge on Trunk 22 near Catalone. The winning contractor was Allcrete Restoration with a bid of $115,891.
"Good roads are a vital part of Nova Scotia's economy," said Michael Baker, acting Minister of Transportation and Public Works. "The department is working hard to get the province's highways in tip-top condition."
The Department of Transportation and Public Works' highways division manages more than 23,000 kilometres of roads in Nova Scotia. It maintains 4,100 bridges and operates seven provincial ferries. Staff provide services from offices in Bridgewater, Bedford, Truro and Sydney.
