Team Nova Scotia Making Waves with Medals

Team Nova Scotia is making waves with gold, silver and bronze medals in canoe/kayak and swimming at the 2005 Canada Games. By noon in Regina today, Aug. 10, the team had captured 18 medals.

The medal count began on Monday, Aug. 8, when canoe/kayak athletes competed in 500 metre events at Wascana Lake. Canoeists Blaine Patriquin and Jonathan Lewington got their gold in the men's C2 event. Silver went to Helen Orton and Maria Halavrezos in the women's C2.

Silver also went to kayakers Kate Zevenhuizen, Hannah Vaughan, Nicole Brown and Jennifer Rowlands in the women's K4 race. Lyall Hatton and Joey Carter won a silver in the K2, and Hatton took a silver in the K1.

Daniel Tattrie took a bronze medal in the men's C1 and Caitlyn Dunphy got one in the women's K1.

Canoe/kayakers added to the medal haul Tuesday, Aug. 9, in the 1,000 metre events. Gold went to Hatton and Vaughan in the men's and women's K1. Alex Jacobi and Shaun Fair took gold in the men's K2 while Vaughan and Zevenhuizen took it in the women's. The Lewington-Patriquin duo took another gold in the C2.

Silver went to Daniel Tattrie in the men's C1, and to Orton and partner Jenna Marks in the women's C2. Jacobi, Carter, Fair and Ryan Gardiner got a silver in the men's K4. Tattrie, Patriquin, Lewington and Daniel Marks -- Jenna's brother -- took silver in the men's C4.

Vaughan took another gold today in the women's K1 6,000 metres. More medals are expected as the canoe/kayak events continue.

Nova Scotia's canoe/kayak teams have been in the top three at every Canada Summer Games.

At the Lawson Aquatic Centre, Special Olympian swimmer Krista Stockman won a bronze medal Tuesday in the women's 100 metre freestyle. A number of other swimmers are making the finals and achieving personal bests.

Team Nova Scotia is also doing well in rugby, with the team being undefeated after four games. There have been wins and losses in basketball, soccer, softball, baseball and tennis. The cycling team is currently among the top provinces in overall standings. Sailor Katelyn Thompson has also been leading after the first few days of competition.

Team Nova Scotia athletes are supported by 45 coaches, 23 managers, two boatmen and 18 mission staff. Four young artists are participating in the National Artists Program at the Games, bringing the team's total to 422 Nova Scotians.

Team Nova Scotia is funded by Nova Scotia Health Promotion. Sponsors include the Atlantic Lottery Corporation, Avis, McDonald's, ATV and the Chronicle Herald.

The Games run until Aug. 20.
