Highway Maintenance Projects Scheduled
Nova Scotia drivers and taxpayers will benefit from improved road surfaces and extended pavement life as a result of two road-improvement contracts awarded by the province.
Transportation and Public Works awarded contracts for concrete patching, crack filling and sealing, and coating on highways in the Annapolis Valley and the South Shore. The projects include:
Kings and Annapolis Counties -- 16.1 kilometres on Trunk 12, Saxon Street, Jackson Barkhouse Road, Dahlgren Crescent North, Dahlgren Crescent South in Kings County, and Seth Drive and Geiger Drive, in Annapolis County. The contract was awarded to Dexter Construction Co. Ltd. with a bid of $394,660.
Queens and Lunenburg Counties -- 6.2 kilometres on Route 208 in Queens County, and 5.4 kilometres on Heckmans Island Road in Lunenburg County. This contract was also awarded to Dexter Construction with a bid of $266,450.
Maintaining these roads will prevent larger construction costs later on. The projects are essential to protect these sections of road and make them safer for drivers.
The Department of Transportation and Public Works' highways division manages more than 23,000 kilometres of roads in Nova Scotia. It maintains 4,100 bridges and operates seven provincial ferries. Staff provide services from district offices in Bridgewater, Bedford, Truro and Sydney.
