Disaster Assistance Program Announced

People affected by floods on the South Shore of the province may be eligible for help dealing with their uninsurable losses.

The province announced today, July 7, a Disaster Financial Assistance program for those who incurred uninsurable losses from flooding in areas of the province in May.

Financial assistance will be available to help people restore their primary residence to a level of basic habitability. It will also be available to help eligible small businesses affected by flood damage.

Between May 21 and May 26, some residents in Shelburne, Queen's and Lunenburg counties saw rainfall amounts in excess of 248 millimetres. Individuals living in these areas who incurred losses may be eligible for assistance.

"People living along the South Shore experienced a very wet spring. No matter how well prepared, nature can be challenging at times. That's why the province is helping residents and businesses by offering this financial assistance program," said Ernest Fage, Minister responsible for the Emergency Measures Act. "After a disaster, people worry about how they will pay for repairs. We want them to know that assistance is available if they have uninsurable losses."

The province estimates total public infrastructure damage at $1.4 million. The extent of damage for private residences and businesses is unknown because assessments are ongoing.

Under the terms of the province's disaster assistance policy, help is only available for uninsurable damages. Any losses sustained as a result of flooding that are, or could have been, insured through personal or corporate insurance, are not eligible.

Claims for assistance are subject to a $1,000 deductible and a $50,000 limit per applicant.

Beginning Friday, July 15, applications for disaster assistance will be available at designated Access Nova Scotia centres or Registry of Motor Vehicles offices. Representatives will be available to help with the application process. The deadline for claims submissions is Friday, Aug. 26, at 4:30 p.m.

Individuals with questions regarding the disaster financial assistance program, can call the province's toll-free line at 1-866-663-6063 between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.
