New South Jetty Officially Opens in Bedford

Nova Scotia residents and visitors now have access to a new south jetty, public boat ramp, and Harbourwalk trail extension in Bedford, following the completion of a $900,000 investment by Waterfront Development Corporation Limited.

"This is great location for all Nova Scotians to come and enjoy the waterfront by land and by water," said Economic Development Minister Ernest Fage. "Waterfront developments like the south jetty, public boat ramp and trail extension help bring the community to the waterfront and the waterfront to the community."

Construction of the south jetty began in August 2004 and was completed late last year. Waterfront Development Corporation continued the waterfront trail and completed the inner boat basin by constructing a jetty to complement Convoy Quay.

"We look for opportunities to create space for the public, not just through the development of waterfront parkland, boardwalks, and walking trails, but by creating a dynamic and exciting environment for all to enjoy," said Brian Lugar, member of the board for the corporation.

In addition to the new jetty, ramp and trail extension there is additional public parking for cars and vehicles with boat trailers, complete with roadway upgrades and lighting.

"People enjoy walks along the Bedford waterfront, and now the popular waterfront trail extends further," said Bill Campbell, acting president, Waterfront Development Corporation Limited. "This development is also providing a great opportunity for all Nova Scotians, and their guests, to launch boats or dock at the new public jetty."

The Waterfront Development Corporation is a provincial Crown corporation under the Office of Economic Development that plans, co-ordinates, promotes and develops properties, events and activities on designated waterfronts around the Halifax harbour.
