50+ Expo Kicks Off Seniors' Week

Veterans and seniors will take centre stage as Seniors' Week (June 13-19) begins with the 16th annual 50+ Expo, Friday, June 10 and Saturday, June 11.

"The theme for Seniors' Week -- Veterans and Seniors: Reflecting on the Past, Anticipating the Future -- acknowledges the 60th anniversary of the end of the Second World War," said Angus MacIsaac, chair of the Senior Citizens' Secretariat. "We are pleased to honour and pay tribute to our veterans."

During the opening ceremonies, Mr. MacIsaac will present veterans with certificates for their significant contributions to their communities.

The main stage entertainment -- Army Boots and Salutes -- is a musical tribute to the best music from the war era. Entertainment also includes the third annual Star Search Talent Contest, exhibits and presentations by Pete Luckett, Neville MacKay, the Halifax Kennel Club and a Friday night dance featuring the Novelty Salesmen.

On Saturday, June 11, Senator John Buchanan will present remarkable senior awards to deserving Nova Scotians. Recipients are selected from three categories: volunteerism, community Service, and leadership.

The 50+ Expo is a non-profit event planned and organized by a volunteer committee of seniors and sponsored by the Senior Citizens' Secretariat, The Chronicle Herald, CJCH, Doctors Nova Scotia, Rx&D, TourTech East and Ambassatours Gray Line.

The 50+ Expo is held from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Friday, June 10 and Saturday, June 11 at Exhibition Park, Halifax. Tickets are $5 per day and are available at the door.
