Museum Weekend Celebrates Heritage
Nova Scotians are encouraged to uncover the unique stories, exceptional objects and special places that are part of their heritage during Museum Weekend, June 11 and 12.
"Museums showcase our heritage for all to experience," said Rodney MacDonald, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Heritage. "This weekend is an ideal opportunity for people of all ages to explore their local museums."
More than 30 museums across Nova Scotia are participating in the 10th Annual Museum Weekend.
Visitors can learn how to preserve family memories; hit the beach with museum interpreters to search for fossils; or take in a birding or nature tour during the weekend. There are also opportunities to see amazing architecture of historic homes and buildings, have fun with hands-on heritage skills, or play games from the 1800s. Participants can discover fascinating facts about life at sea, sample old-fashioned recipes, take in a new exhibit, or seek out answers in a heritage hunt.
Nova Scotians can also get a new perspective on history through museum displays of local students' drawings. The artwork reflects the heritage of the students' communities as part of the Museum Weekend I Spy Heritage contest.
Annual Museum Weekend events highlight the province's rich heritage and the significant role museums play in preserving and interpreting local culture and natural history.
