Health (to Jan. 2011)

A replacement facility is on the way for Richmond Villa, a long-term care facility in St. Peter's, Richmond Co.

A contract has been awarded to Joneljim Construction Limited, Sydney, officials at the Department of Health announced today, May 20. The new facility is expected to cost $11.5 million.

Health Minister Angus MacIsaac said he looks forward to moving ahead on the plans in collaboration with the nursing home's management, the provincial Department of Transportation and Public Works, the municipality, and the surrounding community.

"The new Richmond Villa will give residents the absolute best care in a top-notch facility," said Angus MacIsaac, Minister of Health. "I thank the residents of Richmond Villa for their patience, and I commend staff and management on their firm commitment and dedication to providing seniors with quality care."

Land was purchased in October 2004, in the centre of St. Peter's, in close proximity to the existing facility. Construction on the facility will begin within two weeks, and residents should be able to move in within 18 months.

"We are elated. This process has been a long time coming for many associated with Richmond Villa and this project," said Steve Sampson, chair of the board of directors for Richmond Villa, and a municipal councillor. "Through the input of many stakeholders, government, our staff and community, we look forward to bringing to life a vibrant, state-of-the-art, long-term care facility."

The new nursing home will provide a full range of patient services, including meals, housekeeping and personal care services. Full medical care such as occupational therapy, recreational therapy, nursing care and physical therapy will also be provided.
