Hundreds of Post-secondary Students to Get Summer Jobs

ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT--Hundreds of Post-secondary Students to Get Summer Jobs

The Office of Economic Development is providing almost 600 young people with the opportunity to work this summer.

Economic Development Minister Ernest Fage announced $1.6 million for the Student Career Skills Development Program and the Summer Co-operative Employment Program today, May 6. He noted that many of the jobs are in rural Nova Scotia.

"A number of government departments are offering opportunities for summer jobs so our young people can gain meaningful work experience to supplement their education," said Mr. Fage. "Economic Development's programs ensure that both students and employers benefit as hundreds of not-for-profit groups offer practical ways for students to learn career skills."

The Summer Co-Operative Employment program recently placed 97 students at not-for-profit and government-funded organizations in jobs related to their post secondary co-operative education programs.

The Student Career Skills Development program also provides funding for career-related summer jobs for post-secondary students. This program reflects government's commitment to help organizations hire students while focusing on sectors and areas with the greatest need -- the not-for-profit sector and regions of the province that have high unemployment rates.

All positions can be viewed in the catalogue, which will soon be available on the Office of Economic Development's website atwww.gov.ns.ca/econ/sep www.gov.ns.ca/econ/sep/ . The catalogue will also be available in employment offices across the province the week of May 9.
