Road Paving Contracts Awarded for Highway 102

TRANSPORTATION/PUBLIC WORKS--Road Paving Contracts Awarded for Highway 102

Drivers on one of Nova Scotia's busiest highways will benefit from a smoother, safer road surface after the completion of two paving contracts on Highway 102 this fall.

The two contracts, both awarded to Basin Contracting Ltd., are for work on Highway 102 in Hants County near Shubenacadie and in Colchester County near Brookfield.

The contract in Colchester is for $1.3 million and involves repaving three separate sections of Highway 102 as follows:

  • southbound lanes from the end of the on-ramp at Exit 13A south for 6.4 kilometres to north of Exit 12

  • southbound lanes from 2.2 kilometres north of Exit 12 at Brookfield for 0.5 kilometres south

  • northbound lanes from 0.7 kilometres north of Fort Ellis Road for 0.5 kilometres north.

The contract in Hants County is valued at $823,650 and involves repaving the southbound lanes of Highway 102 from just south of Exit 10 south for 6.9 kilometres to just north of Exit 9. The ramps at Exit 10 will also be repaved.

The combined total of the two contracts is for 14.3 kilometres of paving at a total cost of more than $2.1 million.

"Highway 102 is the major artery that keeps people and commerce flowing through Nova Scotia," said Ron Russell, Minister of Transportation and Public Works. "It's critical that we keep it in good repair."

The Department of Transportation and Public Works' highways division manages more than 23,000 kilometres of roads in Nova Scotia. It maintains 4,100 bridges and operates seven provincial ferries. Staff provide services from offices in Bridgewater, Bedford, Truro and Sydney.
