Premier Encourages Nova Scotians to Honour Veterans
PREMIER'S OFFICE--Premier Encourages Nova Scotians to Honour Veterans
Premier John Hamm encouraged Nova Scotians, today, May 5, to extend their appreciation to Nova Scotia's veterans this weekend on the 60th anniversary of the Allied victory in Europe.
"Our veterans fought bravely to protect the freedoms we have today," said Premier Hamm. "Their courage and sacrifice honours us all and I hope all Nova Scotians will take the time to let our veterans know how much they mean to us."
Sunday, May 8, commonly referred to as V-E Day, marks the anniversary of the German surrender that officially ended the European component of the Second World War. Throughout Europe, and around the world, events are planned to recognize this historic anniversary and pay respect to the veterans who made it possible.
In Nova Scotia, a veterans' parade is planned for 1 p.m. on Sunday, May 8, beginning at the Atlantic Superstore on Barrington Street in Halifax. The parade will run along Barrington Street, and end with a commemorative ceremony at Grand Parade.
"Our veterans represent the best of what it means to be Nova Scotian," Premier Hamm said. "On Sunday we can show them the best of our entire community, by joining them to mark this historic occasion."
This year marks the 60th anniversary of the end of the Second World War. The government of Canada declared 2005 the Year of the Veteran to recognize the contributions and sacrifices of Canada's veterans. The province is working closely with Veterans Affairs Canada and the Nova Scotia standing committee on veterans affairs on a program of events and activities to honour and commemorate veterans.
