Waterfront Development Corp. Wins Award for Dartmouth Trail

WATERFRONT DEVELOPMENT CORP-- Waterfront Development Corp. Wins Award for Dartmouth Trail

The Waterfront Development Corporation Limited has received recognition for developing a user-friendly, accessible trail along the Dartmouth waterfront.

The corporation received an honourable mention for urban design in the public open spaces category from Halifax Regional Municipality on Thursday, April 28, for its work on the Dartmouth Harbourwalk Trail.

"The staff of the corporation are working to bring people back to the waterfront, and the waterfront to communities. This award shows that their approach is working," said Cecil Clarke, acting Minister of Economic Development. "The Dartmouth Harbourwalk Trail provides an opportunity for a shoreline walk as well as a pedestrian footpath for students and staff from the Woodside Ferry Terminal to the new campus of Nova Scotia Community College."

The Harbourwalk Trail is a 1.2-kilometre, barrier-free, multi-use trail along the Dartmouth waterfront from Woodside Ferry terminal to Cusack Street in Dartmouth. It opened in June 2004. Future phases are planned to connect the trail to Dartmouth Cove.

"The success of this trail is based on working closely with the Halifax Regional Municipality, Transportation and Public Works and the community," said Bill Campbell, acting president, Waterfront Development Corporation Limited. "The result is the first completely accessible trail in the region which provides a magnificent view of Halifax Harbour."

The Dartmouth Harbourwalk Trail also links to the Trans Canada Trail and the Halifax Regional Municipality's linear park system and complements continued development of downtown Dartmouth.

The corporation developed the trail in partnership with several government agencies and community groups, including: Nova Scotia Office of Economic Development; the provincial Department of Transportation and Public Works; Capital District Health Authority; Halifax Regional Municipality; and the Dartmouth Harbourfront Trails Association.

Conceptual design was provided by Ekistics Planning and Design, and detail design was provided by Gordon Radcliffe and O'Halloran Campbell Consultants Limited.

The Waterfront Development Corporation Limited is a provincial Crown corporation that plans, co-ordinates, promotes and develops properties, events and activities on designated waterfronts around Halifax Harbour.
