Bill Tightens Rules For School Board Members

School board members convicted of serious offences would lose their positions under amendments to the Education Act introduced today, April 22.

"Board members hold a public trust and must be held accountable," said Education Minister Jamie Muir. "This bill sets some new rules about who is eligible to sit on our school boards."

The amendments include provisions regarding removal of a board member convicted of a serious criminal offence or certain child-related offences.

Board members will also be barred from being an employee of their own board during their tenure and for six months afterward.

Also, if a board member resigns, he or she will be barred from running in special elections called to replace them.
