Site Selected For Stewiacke Elementary

A site on Kitchener Street has been chosen for the new Stewiacke Elementary School, Department of Education officials said today, April 5.

The site, known as the Crawford property, was one of three submitted by the Chignecto Regional School Board for review by the Department of Education and the Department of Transportation and Public Works, which will manage the construction project.

The Department of Transportation and Public Works recommended the Crawford property after evaluating all three submitted sites according to standard criteria.

In accepting the recommendation, Education Minister Jamie Muir thanked the board and community volunteers for their contribution to the selection process.

"They've done well, but the work has just begun," said Mr. Muir. "I know their contribution will continue as we work through the programming and design phases of the school."

The cost of the Grade Primary to 6 school is estimated at $8.0 million.

Construction is scheduled to begin in July 2007 and completion is targeted for September 2008.
